The Cost of Ignorance: A PCM’s Tale

Aminu, a vibrant NYSC Prospective Corps Member from Lagos, was thrilled to be posted to Kano for his service year in 2025. Raised in a predominantly Christian community, he was eager to experience Nigeria’s diversity but unaware of the religious sensitivities in the North, where Islam shapes much of daily life.

During orientation camp, Aminu was his usual outspoken self, often debating politics and religion with fellow corps members. One evening, he joined a group at the Mammy Market, where the conversation turned to religious practices. Unfamiliar with the conservative norms of Kano, Aminu loudly criticized certain Islamic traditions, assuming his camp friends shared his liberal views. Unbeknownst to him, a local vendor overheard his remarks, which he deemed disrespectful to Islam.

The next day, as Aminu walked through a nearby market to buy essentials, a group of agitated youths confronted him. The vendor had spread word of Aminu’s comments, exaggerating them as blasphemy. Despite Aminu’s attempts to explain, the situation escalated. In the chaos, he was pushed to the ground, sustaining a broken arm and bruises before NYSC officials and locals intervened.

Aminu’s injury required weeks of treatment, and he faced disciplinary action from the NYSC for stirring unrest, nearly costing him his service year. The incident left him shaken, realizing too late that his ignorance of Kano’s religious boundaries—where respect for Islamic norms is paramount—had put him in grave danger.
